The location of the region in the center of the huge Ukrainian crystalline shield causes the presence of plenty of mineral deposits. On the region's territory there are 270 deposits of brown coal, iron-stone, kaolin, granite, gold, silver, bismuth, tin, lead and niobium. The supplies of uranium make 83% of national volume as well as nickel and cobalt – over 50%, crystalline graphite – 60%, chrome and combustible slates – almost 100%.
Almost whole raw material base of uranium of Ukraine is located in Kirovograd Region that is enough for providing enterprises of nuclear energy with nuclear fuel in prospect.
The gold deposits are basis for gold industries of the region. It is discovered over 10 mineral occurrences, in separate tests there are to 400 gr of gold per ton of stone.
The presence of single deposits of chromos ores in Ukraine (Golovanivsk District) and combustible slates (Oleksandriya District) is a feature of this region.
Kirovograd Region pays attention to the increase of network of the natural-protected territories and objects. Now there are 178 units with the general area of 11 500 ha, including 26 natural-protected territories of national value, and also local value – 54 protected areas, 44 sights of nature, 49 protected natural boundaries, five parks-sights of garden-park art.
ÒThe status of state value is given to such «pearls» as landscape protected area «Chornolisky», hydrological sight of nature «Bog «Black Forest», dendrology park «Merry Bokovenky», parks-sights of garden-park art «Onufriyivsky Park», «Farm Nadia» and others. They play important role in keeping of disappearing, rare and relict plants and animals, rare groups, and finally it is open-air natural museums. Three breeds of plants and 23 kinds of animals discovered on the territory of Kirovograd Region put to the European Red List as well as 29 breeds of plants and 110 kinds of animals, – to the Red Book of Ukraine.
The rock slopes of river valleys, ravines, mound of stone blocks, areas of virgin covered by feather-grass steppes are beautiful. The names of the protected territories «Poured Stone», «Stone Beam», «Sloe Beam» prove beauty of these places even. The areas of stone steppes with plenty of rare plants are kept on granites close rose to the terrene. All pearls of untouched nature of the land are unique.
It is necessary to mark that Kirovograd Region together with Dnipropetrovs’k and Zaporizhzhya regions enters the Dnieper economic region and by structure of economy is agrarian-industrial.
In the general volume of gross agricultural product of Ukraine the region share is 4,2%, including plant growing – 5,0% and stock-raising – 2,8%. In the structure of land fund the agricultural lands make 83% of regional territory and 4,9% of agricultural lands of Ukraine.
Breeding of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry farming is a basis of stock-raising.
The regional industrial complex covers three leading industries. Extractive industry is represented by enterprises for production power and non power materials, mining and processing of brown coal, unique complexes for mining and production of graphite, uranium ore, granite and kaolin. It is OJSC «Zavalivsky Graphite Works», Ingulska and Smolinska mines, OJSC «Kirovograd Mine Group» etc.
In the structure of processing industry the share of machine-building makes 19,5%, food industry – 39,1%, building materials and glassware – 3,6%, chemical industry – 3,5% and metallurgy – 7,6%
The production of agricultural machines is main direction of machine-building industry. The powerful representatives are OJSC «Chervona Zirka», Firm «Vira-Service», SPA «Etal», OJSC «Olymp», «Ukrnasosservis» Ltd, CJSC «Avtoshtamp» etc. The products of regional machine builders are well-known in Ukraine and abroad.
In chemical industry SJSC «Ukrmedprom», OJSC «Chysti metaly» and «Silikon» Ltd are specialized on production of semiconductor materials and connectors. Over 70 names of paintwork goods is mastered and made by Company «Khimprogres» Ltd and «AKZO Nobel Dekor Ukraine» Ltd.
The region has favourable geographical position and developed transport network. The transport system includes 884,2 km of rails and 10 motorways connecting Ukraine with the CIS and Central and South Europe.
Air transportations are carried out by OJSC «Kirovograd Airlines».
In 2006 the general volume of foreign investments in the regional economy made USD 50,7 mln.
Main countries-investors in 2006 were United Kingdom, Cyprus, Germany, Sweden and USA.
By results of the last year the external trade turnover in goods and services made USD 322,3 mln., including export – USD 214,7 mln., import – USD 107,6 mln.
The region exported commodities to 72 countries of the world, including biggest one is Russian Federation (36,4% of export).
Import of commodities of regional enterprises and organizations came from 55 countries of the world.
In accordance with Decision of the General Assembly of the European Regions, Kirovograd Region was affiliated to the Assembly of the European Regions as full member.
Membership in the GAER enables to take part in common inter-regional projects at international level, to influence on the international European and national policy, and also to promote increase of investment attractiveness of Kirovograd Region in the world and solution of actual economic and social problems of the region.
In relation to regional trade, it is provided by 2 100 enterprises of retail business.
The structure of regional small business covers 5 500 small enterprises.
Medical services are granted by 90 hospital establishments, 203 outpatients and 555 medical points. The regional anti-phthisis center «Lisova polyana», regional balneological hospital in Znamyanka, 617 general educational establishments of all types and forms of property, 27 vocational schools, six higher educational establishments of III-IV level of accreditation and 17 establishments of ²-II level of accreditation function in the region.
The leading role in rising educating trade of pedagogical staff belongs to Kirovograd Regional Institute of Post-Graduate Pedagogical Study. Kirovograd Region is the unique historical center of the Ukrainian culture, cradle of the first professional theatre founded by coryphaeus of the stage M. Kropyvnytsky and I. Tobilevych. The prominent actors M. Sadovsky, P. Saksagansky, M. Zankovetska lived and worked there; writers V. Vynnychenko, I. Mykytenko, Yu. Yanovsky, scientist D. Chyzhevsky, composers G. Neygauz and Yu. Meytus, artists P. Pokarzhevsky, V. Fedorov, figures of the Ukrainian theatre I. Maryanenko and G. Yura were born there. 28 museums operate in the region. Headquarter of Ukrainian Federation of Traditional Karate at the head with Honoured Coach of Ukraine V. Savchenko, master of many winners and prize-winners of championship and cups of Europe on martial arts are placed in Kirovograd. The sportsmen of Kirovograd Region all more significantly declare about themselves in Ukraine and abroad. They won 10 gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals in international competitions.
