Let me to present You one of the most picturesque corners of our Ukraine – Mykolayiv Region.

Our glorious land is always granary of the country and powerful center of shipbuilding, where large ships, vessels, tankers, dry-cargo ships and cutters are launched.

The famous city of shipwrights is important industrial region with the powerful diversifyed industry – machine-building, oil refining, food, sea commercial port, powerful scientific, cultural and health-resort complex.

Undoubtedly, the most valuable treasure of Mykolayiv Region is its talented, wise, hard-working and generous people making huge scientific, intellectual and cultural-spiritual potential of our country.

Mykolayiv Region is one of the highly developed industrial regions of Ukraine. It is characterized by high economic potential and powerful industry that plays important role in the national economic complex of the state.

The favourable geographical location of the region, its industrial and scientific-technological potential providing output of products of world level, fertile agricultural lands and developed transport network create necessary pre-conditions for development of all important spheres of vital functions. During the last years the investment attractiveness of the region grew significantly among investors. The region ensures high growth rates of industrial production volumes. Due to activation of innovation activity of enterprises the competitiveness of their products grew on external market.

The favourable conditions of location of the region caused forming of the powerful diversified industry on its territory. The regional economic potential makes 3 500 industrial enterprises of all forms of property. For already 10 years in succession the dynamics of industrial production has been marked by sustainable tendency to annual growth of production output. In 2006 by comparison with 2000 the volume of industrial production grew by 65,8% as well as by comparison with 2005 – 6,4%. The region has already entered top five regions in 2003 which not only reached but also exceeded the level of year 1990.

In relation to the production of industrial products Mykolayiv Region takes 11th place among 27 administrative-territorial units of Ukraine. The industry ensures over 44,0% of volume of products of shipbuilding in Ukraine as well as almost 100% of state production of ship gas turbines, almost 90% of alumina production (raw material for aluminium production), over 70% of production of leather commodities. About 1 500 enterprises of different forms of property function in the region.

In the structure of production sale 75% is covered by products of finishing industry as well as 0,6% – extractive industry, 24,4% – production and distributing of electric power, gas and water. Among activities of processing industry the great share of sale is made by food industry and processing of agricultural products (29%), metallurgy and metal-working (20,2%), machine-building complex (18,1%).

Machine-building and metal-working industry of Mykolayiv Region is leading industry of the region concentrating the huge labour potential – almost 52% of industrial-manufacturing staff. The powerful enterprises of shipbuilding ensuring production of ship equipment and other enterprises of machine-building and metal-working enter this industry.

Shipbuilding is a leading industry of machine-building sector. The basic products of plants are tankers, dry-cargo vessels, container carriers, refrigerators, trawlers, floating hotels, cutters and others. The leader of national shipbuilding – OJSC «Damen Shipyards Ocean» making over 50% of shipbuilding products of Mykolayiv and almost 30% of Ukraine operates sustainable. SE «Shipyard named after 61 communards» is the oldest enterprise in the city building transport refrigerators with displacement of 5 000– 6 800 tons with load of holds of 260 000 – 500 000 cubic foot for refrigerator freight carrying.

One of the leading places in the regional industrial potential is taken by non-ferrous metallurgy represented by biggest and powerful European company of aluminium industry – Mykolayiv Aluminous Plant Ltd having up-to-date equipment. Annual production of over 1,4 mln tons of alumina fully provides national demands. In the general volume of products of non-ferrous metallurgy of Ukraine the share of this company is over 90%. The company continues development of investment project «Increase of production of alumina to 1,6 mln. tons a year in 2008».

The powerful enterprise of machine-building industry – Production Association «Zorya-Mashproekt» producing multi-profile gas-turbine engines for equipment of ships and vessels and also for transporting natural gas and production of electric power is known in our country and abroad. Main foreign partners of this company are Russia, India and Iran. Besides, joint-stock companies «Frigate», «Pervomayskdizelmash», «Equator», «Mykolayiv Plant of Lubricating and Filtering Equipment», «Konveermash» operate in this sector also. There is intensive development of food industry here.

The regional power industry is represented by 326 power stations with general capacity over 3,1 mln kW. The basis of regional power industry is Separated Subsection of NEC «Energoatom» «South-Ukrainian NPP» which share in general production of electric power arrives 99%.

The regional scientific sphere is many-sided, multi-profile and multi-function: as a separate type of economic activity (research and project-design works and applied researches), inter-industry and inter-public principles of development of economy and social sphere (fundamental researches), component of production of goods, services, including educational (scientific and technical services).

In 2006 the scientific complex of Mykolayiv Region has 54 organizations and enterprises performing research and scientific-technical studies during a year. Traditionally for our region the majority (two third) of scientific organizations perform scientific researches and developments in the field of engineering science.

Agricultural industry is 862 agricultural enterprises, including 450 biggest farms processing 846 000 ha of plough-land, 4445 farms processing 253 000 ha of plough-land, almost 57 000 individual farms independently processing 400 000 ha of plough-land and 493 000 other economic subjects having 197 000 ha of plough-land. The region has worked and annually improves scientific structure of cultivating areas, where main place is taken by corn and high profitable crops as soy, rape, flax, mustard and others.

Mykolayiv Region is located in very favourable economic-geographical conditions. Being on the joint of transport ways, it has all opportunities for development of different kinds of transport. The regional transport system comprises marine, river, railway, motor, aviation and pipeline transport.

Four ports entered single Bug-Dnieper marine transport joint function in Mykolayiv: Mykolayiv Sea Commercial Port, Dnieper-Bug Sea Port created in the structure of Mykolayiv Aluminous Plant, Specialised Sea Port «Oktyabr'sk», Mykolayiv River Port. On the whole the freight handling on own and leased marine and river moorages is provided by 13 regional companies of different forms of property in 2006.

Among priorities of regional economic policy in 2007 there is subsequent development and growth of production of goods of basic industries, improvement of branch form of production, extending of share of products with high degree of processing, in the first turn for sale to export; providing of competitiveness of industrial complex of the region and comprehensive development of innovation direction.

One of main strategic directions in the long-term plan of regional development will be development of innovation technologies. Mechanization and automation, introduction of effective technologies take special significance on the modern stage of economic development for introduction of innovation processes in production. Realization of innovation strategy of the economic growth needs speed-up development of hi-tech productions capable to make scientific efficiency goods with high added value, to form export potential of these productions and to improve technological level of enterprises due to progressive scientific and technical achievements.

The tasks of new stage of regional development are major now. It is a period of high-quality transformations in all spheres of public life.
