I am greeting You on the pages of regular issue of Almanac «Business Image of Ukraine. Achievements. Experience. Recognition» that offers wonderful opportunity to every region of our country to represent their achievements.

 

You are welcome by picturesque Suma Region – the land rich in fertile black earths, forests and rivers, and also remarkable people, majority of them glorified native land by tireless labour in the field of education, culture and sport.

 

Representing region in this edition, I want to mark that Sumy Region is a powerful region which has huge industrial, agricultural, scientific, educational and cultural potential.

 

We have to be proud of regional residents working in all branches of science, culture and business and glorifying Motherland by labour, talent and knowledge.

 

Sumy Region will certainly charm everybody who firstly step on surprising beauty land, will calm by affability and hospitality of local people. So, Taras Shevchenko and Lesya Ukrayinka were impressed by beauty of our land at one time. It inspired them.

 

The creation of the most prominent sight of Kyiv Rus – «The Lay of the Host of Igor» is connected with our land. The prominent scientists, writers and composers O. Potebnya, I. Bagryany, P. Kulish. B. Grinchenko, O.Oles, M. Khvylyovy, B. Antonenko-Davydovych, M. Berezovsky, D. Bortnyansky and many others were born there.

 

Sumy Region is open to mutually beneficial cooperation with partners. Due to investments CJSC «Craft Foods Ukraine» (TM «Korona»), Valshali Group, India (SPA-Resort «Buymerivsky») successfully function in the region etc.

 

I am confident that new business contacts with other regions of our country and also other countries will promote subsequent economic development of the region.

REVIEW

Sumy Region is situated in the north-eastern part of Ukraine. On the north and east it borders upon Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod regions of Russian Federation, south and southeast – Poltava and Kharkiv regions, west – Chernihiv Region of Ukraine.

The region's territory is 2 383 200 ha, including agricultural lands – 1 703 800 ha (4% of Ukrainian agricultural lands). 165 rivers flow by the region's territory; the biggest are Desna, Seym, Sula, Psyol and Vorskla.

 

The region was founded on January 10, 1939. It comprises 18 districts and 15 cities, including 7 cities of regional submission, 20 settlements of urban type, 1 491 rural points. Amount of regional population is 1 211 000 people, including urban – 803 000 people and rural – 408 000 people.

 

All minerals of the land belong to the category of non-metallic: oil, gas, peat, chalk, stone and potassium salts, gypsum, limestone, marl, glass sand, heat-resistant and refractory clay, mineral paint (mainly ochre), building sand and stone.

The natural-protected fund makes 102 protected territories and objects with the general area over 139 800 ha, including preserves, protected zones, sights of nature, dendrology park, national-natural park, sights-monuments, protected natural boundaries occupying 5,9% of the region's territory.

 

History of Sumy land takes beginning from the depth of millenniums. The unique are Ambassadorial Scythian necropolises located mainly on the territory of Romny District.

 

In X-XIII centuries the lands of present Sumy Region entered one of the mightiest states of medieval Europe – Kyiv Rus. Here there were Old Russian cities of Romny and Glukhiv and placed in the center of modern Bilopillya Vyr mentioned in chronicles. Ancient Putyvlya is a pearl of Sumy Region which connected historical events represented in world known literary treasure «The Lay of the Host of Igor».

 

The transference of the capital of the Left-Bank Ukraine in Glukhiv connects so-called «Glukhiv period» in history of Ukraine. Hetmans Ivan Skoropadsky, Pavlo Polubotok, Danylo Apostol and Kyrylo Rozumovsky had residents there; central public institutions of Hetman State were also located there.

 

Almost 2 500 objects of cultural inheritance are under state guard in the region, including 1457 sights of history, 102 of monumental art, 780 of archaeology and 373 of architecture. Activity on creation of the State historical-cultural reserve «Posullya» including historical-memorial complex «Motherland of the last ataman of Zaporizhzhya Sich Petro Kalnyshevsky» is lasting.

 

Now 12 ancient temples are kept in Sumy Region. The prominent cells of spirituality – the monasteries are known beyond the region's territory. Nearby Glukhiv there is sacred object – Glynska pustyn. Not far away the village Nova Sloboda, Putyvlya District there is famous Sofroniyivsky Monastery which has unique spelaean complex of XIII–XIV century. In Putyvlya the ensemble of Molchansky Monastery is towered on Pryseymivsky hill.

 

The rich historical-cultural inheritance of the region assists to development of tourism. A row of tourist routes of different direction lately developed enable to familiarize with the colour of Sumy land, satisfy requirements of the most demanding tourists. The base routes are Gold Necklace of Sumy Land and Suburb Sumy Land.

 

Thematic routes «By Cossack routes», «Old history of Sumy land», «Literary and musical Sumy Region», «Folk handicrafts of Sumy land» are interesting for tourists.

 

To services of guests there are 52 tourist companies, 44 hotels, 300 restaurants, cafe, bars, five bases of rest, two sanatoriums and SPA-resort «Buimerivsky». The region has prospects for development of green tourism, attracts supporters of active rest.

 

Sumy Region is a perspective and powerful industrial-agrarian region with the developed infrastructure. Due to favourable geographical location, neighbourhood with the developed centers of Ukraine and Russia, the land always attracts businessmen.

 

In 2006 the industrial enterprises of the region sold products to the amount of UAH 8,5 bln. In the structure of sold products 26,4% belongs to machine-building, 25,2% to extractive industry and 20,6% to food industry.

 

Sumy Region has powerful machine-building complex which combines almost 50 large and medium industrial enterprises of different forms of property providing 39 000 people or 42% of all workers in the industry with jobs.

 

Machine-building complex is specialized on production of hi-tech complex goods of chemical and oil equipment, gas-pumping units, pumps and industrial pipeline armature.

 

The powerful companies of machine-building industry are Sumy Machine-Building Association named after M.V. Frunze, OJSC «Nasosenergomash», OJSC «VNDIkompresormash», OJSC «SELMI», «Motordetal-Konotop» Ltd, OJSC «Sumykhimprom», Shostka Public Factory «Impuls», Romny Association «Talan».

 

Wide range of products is made by enterprises of chemical and petrochemical industry: mineral fertilizers, acids, mineral pigments, coagulants for water purification, chemical reagents, paintwork wares, magnetic ribbon, plastic wares, elements of live ammunitions, explosion facilities, explosion initiators, fireworks wares, rubber wares, vaccines liquid and dry for veterinary, preparations of blood and others.

 

They perform activity on attracting foreign investments for introduction of energy-saving technologies in the regional public utilities. So, due to TACIS Project «Support of public utilities services of Ukraine» they settle problem of reconstruction of sewerage economy of Shostka and Romny. It is planned to attract facilities of Scandinavia Financial Corporation «NEFKO» for development project «Reconstruction of two pump stations of the second lift» in Sumy.

 

For the economy of Sumy Region agroindustrial complex is a very important link considerably determining its social-economic state, prospects of subsequent development, providing regional demands in food stuffs and making great payment in food safety of the country.

 

The priority direction in plant growing is production of food corn, sugar beets, winter and furious rape, oily radish, sunflower, flax, hemp, groat cultures and potato.

 

The stock-raising is specialized on breeding cattle of milk and meat direction, pigs and poultry farming.

The production volume of sugar beets grew. For harvest of 2007 it is cultivated winter crops on the area of 198 700 ha that is by 18 200 ha bigger than in 2006.

 

Total number of livestock of pigs was increased by 6,1%, sheep and goats – 7,2%, production of eggs – 3,6% in all categories of farms.

 

Sumy Region is open for mutually beneficial cooperation with business partners. General volume of direct foreign investments attracted in the regional economy makes USD 157,2 mln. or USD 128 per capita. Investments came from 33 countries of the world, in particular Switzerland, Liechtenstein, USA, Cyprus, Britannic Virgin Islands, and put in 140 enterprises of different industries of economy.

 

CJSC «Craft Foods Ukraine» is one of the biggest companies of food industry in Ukraine. Due to investment funds of Valshali Group Company the activity of SPA-resort «Buimerivsky» in Okhtyrka District was renewed.

 

High activity of foreign investors is observed in industries of machine-building, food industry, wholesale and mediation in trade, production and distributing of electric power, gas, water.

 

Small business performs important social-economic function in development of the region.

 

The strategic goal of Sumy Region is creation of modern industrial-technological complex which will provide internal demands of the country, region, competitive export, transition to resource-saving and ecologically friendly model of industry development, market saturation by goods and services, increase of level and quality of life of regional residents.

 

Achieved positive changes in the economy in combination with effective using of resource potential of the region will assist to subsequent development of social and humanitarian spheres, increase of level and welfare of population in Sumy Region.
