Kharkiv Region makes considerable contribution to development of economy, science, education and culture of Ukraine. Powerful machine-building, instrument-making, fuel and energy potential of the country is concentrated exactly in Kharkiv. Every eighth student of Ukraine gets higher education in the intellectual capital of Ukraine - the city of Kharkiv; one of the best in the world scientific schools was created there. Due to it Slobozhanshchyna takes one of the leading places in Ukraine.

 

Today the region dynamically and effectively functions and develops; the real conditions for subsequent development of economy, science and culture were created.

 

Almanac «Business Image of Ukraine. Achievements. Experience. Recognition» prove above-mentioned. Next to companies and firms operating for a long time which have already recommended itself in the international arena; many new names will appear in this edition this year. These companies make first steps only. I am confident that majority of them will accompany success.

REVIEW

Kharkiv Region is situated in the north-eastern part of Ukraine and borders upon Dnipropetrovs'k, Donetsk, Lugansk, Poltava and Sumy regions. On the north of Kharkiv Region – the frontier with the Russian Federation.

 

The region's territory is 31 400 sq. km and 2 812 100 persons live here. By administrative-territorial division it comprises 27 districts, 17 cities, including 7 cities of regional submission, 61 settlements of urban type and 1 683 rural settlements.

 

On the region's territory they extract gas, oil and gas condensate, brown and anthracite coal, rocked salt. The extraction of building sands, clays and mineral waters are developed.

 

Today Kharkiv Region is one of the highly-developed industrial regions of Ukraine, leading center of science and culture.

764 industrial enterprises function in Kharkiv Region. Basis of its industrial potential is made by machine-building, food industry and processing of agricultural products, fuel and energy complex, chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical industry, production of other non-metal mineral wares (building materials) and light industry.

 

Traditionally Kharkiv Region is the center of Ukrainian machine-building. 192 enterprises of this sector function here. Main types of activity are production of machines and equipment (OJSC «Turboatom», SE «V.O. Malyshev Plant», OJSC «Lozovsky Forging-Mechanical Plant»), OJSC «Kharkiv Instrument-Making Plant», OJSC «Kharkivkholodmash»; production of electric and electronic equipment (HEMZ, SE «Elektrovazhmash», OJSC «Ukrelektromash» and CJSC «Pivdenkabel»); production of transport equipment (Kharkiv State Aviation Production Enterprise, SE «Kharkiv Machine-Building Plant «FED» and CJSC «Petrovsky Kharkiv Bicycle Plant»).

 

The production of Kharkiv enterprises is well known all over the world. It is aircrafts and turbines, cable wares and space launch systems, turbine-driven generators for power stations and generators for diesel engines.

 

Almost 21,5% of industrial production is provided by fuel and energy complex. Its basis is enterprises for transmission and supply of electric power (JSC «Kharkivoblenergo»); for generation of electric power (Zmiyiv Thermal Power Plant of OJSC «Tsenterenergo», OJSC «Kharkiv Cogeneration Plant-5», Affiliate «Cogeneration Plant-2 «Eskhar» and CJSC «Cogeneration Plant-3»); for extraction of gas (Gas Industry Administration «Shebelynkagazvydobuvannya», Gas Industry Administration «Kharkivgazvydobuvannya» and Investor Nafta Gaz Ltd); for transporting of natural gas (Department of Gas Trunk Pipe Lines «Kharkivtransgaz»); for exploration drilling (Drilling Department «Ukrburgaz»).

 

Unique pharmaceutical scientific and industrial center is placed in Kharkiv Region; its field is research, development and production of medications. By concentration of enterprises and amount of pharmacological groups of medications, Kharkiv Region takes first place in the country.

 

The regional pharmaceutical enterprises provide over 40% of general range of national medications and some of them (vaccines, serum) – exceptionally in Kharkiv.

 

By some technological lines the enterprises of the sector meet international standards GMP (Pharmaceutical Company «Zdorovya» Ltd, Experimental Factory SSCM, CJSC «Biolik» and CJSC «Stoma»).

 

Almost 500 enterprises of light industry which belong to medium and small business offer wide range of goods: outerwear, fabrics, shoe, head-dresses and knitting, haberdashery, legwear, sewing and wall goods.

 

Women's outerwear of OJSC «Tinyakov Sewing Factory», business women's wear of Sewing Factory «Elita» Ltd and Mangust Ltd are very popular among customers.

 

The biggest enterprises of Ukraine for production of cement, slate, reinforced-concrete and other building materials are placed in the region. More than 120 publishing houses and publishing organizations of Kharkiv Region produce various book products: imaginative, scientific, legal and information literature, textbooks for educational establishments.

 

High level of economic potential of the region, high density of population caused development of different kinds of transport – railway, motor-car and pipeline (gas pipeline). To services of Kharkiv residents and guests of the city there is Kharkiv underground.

 

By volume of gross agricultural production the region is one of the leading in Ukraine. The area of agricultural lands makes 2,4 mln. ha, including 1,9 mln. ha of plough-land.

 

The agricultural production in the region is ensured by 2 300 agricultural enterprises, including 434 agricultural farms, 59 agricultural cooperative societies, 50 farms of agricultural scientific-research establishments and educational establishments, 448 subsidiary facilities of state and non-state enterprises, establishments and organisations, and also 1290 farms.

 

Among other regions of Ukraine, Kharkiv Region is selected by high level of production of cereals, sugar beet, sunflower and intensive stock-raising of milk-meat direction and well-developed industrial poultry farming.

 

Basis of agricultural production is plant growing that provides almost 64% of gross products. Stock-raising makes 36% of general production.

 

The scientific providing of regional agricultural complex is ensured by Regional center of scientific providing agricultural production that comprises 16 research establishments and agricultural educational establishments. Fundamental researches on theoretical bases of selection of agricultural breeds and animals, developments of modern biotechnologies of animal generation with the use of cellular and gene engineering are carried out here.

 

Kharkiv Region is a powerful educational and scientific center of Ukraine. General amount of establishments of education and science is 2076 items, including 614 preschool, 973 general, 111 out-of-school and 92 higher educational establishments of all levels of accreditation and 228 scientific establishments.

 

Kharkiv Region is a powerful industrial center. For providing demands in skilled specialists, 58 vocational schools prepare specialists by 142 professions and four directions.

 

The science is the component of providing society development. During the last years the science of Kharkiv Region takes first place among regions of Ukraine by amount of scientific developments and their introduction. The Kharkiv scientific schools are world well-known.

 

Among regional researchers there are 1813 doctors of sciences, 302 academicians, 172 members-correspondents of the NASU and branch academies of sciences. The share of researchers among regional residents is the highest in Ukraine.

 

The combination of potential of higher educational establishments and scientific establishments enabled to create the proper conditions for development of international market of educational services in the country on granting higher education. Almost 9 800 foreign students from 96 countries of the world study in the regional higher educational establishments.

 

The cultural traditions of Kharkiv Region are rich. On the region's territory there are almost 9000 sights of history, archaeology, monumental art and architecture under state guard. Kharkiv Region is a place of conducting many creative festivals and contests. Among it there are known beyond Ukraine boundaries Festival of Classic Music «Kharkiv Assemblies», V. Kraynev International Contest of Pianists, Gnat Khotkevych Contest of Folk Performers, K. Shulzhenko International Festival of Pop Song, Christmas Festival of Children's Creation «Zymovy sontsevorot» and Ethnographic Festival «Pechenizke pole».

 

Sport Kharkiv is a glorious history and contemporaneity of Olympic movement, continuation of sport traditions and friendly relations.

 

Today Kharkiv Region is represented by 37 teams of playing kinds of sport in the different leagues of national championship.

 

The sport base is well-developed in the region: 56 stadiums, 972 gymnasias and 29 swimming pools.

The dynamics of increase of volumes of foreign investments in the regional economy and expansion of countries-investors prove investment attractiveness of Kharkiv Region.

 

In July, 2007 the general volume of foreign investments in the regional economy was USD 1 212,5 mln. made by 60 countries of the world and invested in 565 regional enterprises.

 

The foreign trade turnover made USD 1 189,1 mln. Among reliable partners of 114 countries of the world there are Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, Byelorussia, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Germany, Hungary and Poland.
