Over 3 000 rivers and streams flow by the region's territory. The biggest rivers are Dneester, South Bug, Goryn, Sluch, Zbruch and Smotrych. The region has 60 reservoirs and 1799 ponds. The biggest reservoirs are Dniester and Shchedriv on the South Bug. By supplies of water resources the region takes sixth place in the country.
372 deposits of 23 types of minerals are found out here. Basic of them are saponite clay, phosphorite, apatite, granite, flint and graphite.
167 deposits of the brick-tiled raw material, building stone, limestone for cement and sugar industry are developed.
The shop for production of saponite flour was built in Slavuta. The supplies of medical waters like as «Zbruchanska» enabled to found State Resort of Sataniv and Sanatorium of Makiv. Zbruchansky deposit of mineral waters is biggest one in Europe. Scientific researches confirmed financial viability of creating resort area «Kurortopolis» – the powerful industry of human making healthy and international tourism.
The region is one of the main suppliers of carbonate raw material for sugar industry of Ukraine. Out of seven found out deposits (general supplies – 129,4 mln. tons) four is developed. 32,8 mln tons of raw material are concentrated here.
Khmelnytsky Region has well-developed industrial complex.
The volumes of industrial products are increased due to expansion of already existing and creation of new productions, and also due to the increase of labour productivity.
In 2006 the output of industrial products increased by 9,8% (5,3% in Ukraine on average).
Leading sector of the industry is machine-building (55 powerful enterprises employing over 16 000 persons).
The biggest enterprises of machine-building are SE «Novator», SE «Krasyliv Aggregate Plant», OJSC «Krasyliv Machine-Building Plant» and OJSC «Ukrelektroaparat».
The material and technical equipping of machine-building enterprises enables to manufacture hi-tech products.
The enterprises of food industry are regenerated by rapid rates. They increase manufacturing of goods, master new technologies, improve labour efficiency and create new jobs. Enterprises ensure most share of industrial products (almost 22,7%).
The products of Khmelnytsky workers in the food industry are known not only in the region, but also beyond its boundaries. The leading enterprises are public corporations «Adams», Khmelnytsky Butter and Cheese Base, Vinkovtsi Cheese Plant and Shepetivka Meat-Packing Plant.
Agrarian sector is highly effective and export-oriented sector of economy. Agricultural lands occupy an area over 1,5 mln. ha.
Main direction of plant-growing in the region is growing of cereals and forage crops: winter wheat and maize on silo, and also production of potato and gardening.
There are positive tendencies on stabilizing and increasing of production of agricultural goods due to introduction of highly productive technologies. Over 70 000 tons of rape were produced last year. For harvest of 2007, 72 000 ha of winter rape are sown that is by 2 times bigger. Great attention is paid to growing of sugar beets.
Meat-milk sector prevails in cattle breeding. The production of meat and eggs increased. Expansion of capacity of two poultry farms for breeding chickens-broilers is foreseen; mastering of complexes, large farms and building of new objects is conducted. New jobs are created in the village.
Changes on better are observed in investment climate of the region. In 2006, 1347,8 mln. hryvna of foreign investments is directed in development of regional economy, including 88,2% are investments in the fixed assets.
Khmelnytsky Region is intensively built. One of the important directions in the social sphere is housing building. Builders of all forms of property put into service 130 600 sq. m of general area of habitation.
Activation of economic activity promotes expansion of foreign trade cooperation. The regional companies provide commercial operations with 83 countries of the world. Economic transformations positively influence on solution of important social questions. New jobs are annually created. In 2006 they created 28 400 new jobs that makes 102,1% of annual task. Welfare of population grows.
Khmelnytsky Region takes leading positions in educational activity. The network of medical establishments and their highly skilled personnel potential has been kept in the region. Activity on distribution of medical-sanitary help by principles of family medicine lasts.
The volumes of bank credits dynamically grow in the regional economy that promotes economic growth. In 2006 the general sum of credits to the subjects of management activity made 2790,4 mln. hryvna. The share of long-term credits is increased.
One of the perspective achievements of Khmelnytsky Region is introduction of cluster model of economic development for the first time in Ukraine. Building, food, sewing and tourist clusters incorporated in Association «Podillya Pershy» have already functioned.
There are almost 270 territories and objects of the natural protected fund in Khmelnytsky Region that makes 455 objects with the general area of 304 300 ha (14,8% of the region's territory). Among them there is National Natural Park «Podilski Tovtry» created in 1996 – biggest one in Europe with the area over 261 000 ha, where 60 breeds of plants, 80 breeds of insects, birds and animals put to the Red book of Ukraine are saved. One of the most beautiful coves «Atlantida» is located in the park.
One of the ancient cities of not only Khmelnytsky Region, but also Ukraine and Europe is Kamyanets-Podilsky named by pearl on a stone.
Old-Russian and medieval part of Kamyanets-Podilsky is proclaimed National historical-architectural preserve; about 200 buildings – sights of architecture of IX-XV centuries are located here.
The center of UNESCO world cultural inheritance registered the statement of Kamyanets-Podilsky about including of its Old city to the list of objects of world cultural inheritance. Popularity of ancient Kamyanets as tourist center is provided by conducting of annual holidays (Cossack funs) and festivals (International Festival of National Cultures).
Cultural and historical sights of XV–XVIII centuries attract regional researchers, tourists and businessmen.
Strategy of economic and social development of Khmelnytsky Region for 2004–2015 was adopted with the purpose to form high-quality new regional policy; it determined strategic priorities of regional development, in particular: improving quality of human life; renewal and strengthening of status of the region as well-developed industrial-agrarian region of Ukraine; rational use of natural-resource and tourist– recreation potential; smoothing of social-economic development of territories and complex development of settlements; development of small business as element of structural development of economy.
Advantageous geographical position, presence of transport links, rich natural-resource potential create favourable conditions for acceleration of advancement of Khmelnytsky Region toward sustainable development and economic growth connected with active social policy.
