Chernihiv Region has huge raw mineral-material potential. The supplies of high-quality glass sands (Ripky District) and oil have national value. Oil and gas condensate deposits are concentrated in Ichnya, Pryluky, Varva, Talalayivka districts and enter Dnieper-Donetsk oil and gas district.
The deposits of chalk in Novgorod-Siversk District and brick raw material on the region's territory have large industrial value. There are 15 deposits of clays suitable for making tile, glazed tile, potteries and wares of artistic ceramics.
Single in Ukraine deposit of bischofite (Novopodilske, Ichnya District) was opened on the region's territory. It is unique one by supplies and medical features; the sources of mineral waters are found in the central part.
Rozlyotske (Krolevetske) deposit of phosphates with supplies in the volume of 7 885 000 tons is located in Korop District.
The rich of Chernihiv Region is forests occupying over 724 200 ha.
There are 1570 rivers on the region's territory as well as almost 3 300 reservoirs.
The region is a single with powerful natural, intellectual and economic potential.
Chernihiv Region manufactures fire trucks, albuminous sausage shell, cord fabric, equipment for poultry farming, produces 80% of wool fabric, 70% of wallpapers, 30% of chemical fabric and thread, takes important segment on the national markets of beer, tobacco and chemical fibres.
In the branch structure of regional industry the priority sectors are follows as food, fuel, machine-building and metal-working, woodworking, cellulose-paper and light industry. The important place is taken by power engineering, chemical and petrochemical industry. Among basic producers there are following industrial enterprises as JSC «Khimvolokno», Worsted and Carded Company «Cheksil», Kryukiv Factory of Technical Papers, Pryluky Plant «Pozhmashina» and Nizhyn Plant «Silmash».
Food industry and processing of agricultural products prevails in the regional industrial complex. They combine over 100 enterprises providing one half of regional industrial production.
Chernihiv Region has powerful agricultural potential and is one of the biggest agrarian-developed in Ukraine. Agricultural lands occupy 2,1 mln. ha.
In the structure of agricultural production the significant place is taken by stock-raising, mainly meat and milk direction, pig breeding and poultry farming.
The geographical location, natural resources, ramified network of motor-car ways, access to the markets of Ukraine and the CIS create opportunities for expansion of export potential. The region has foreign trade relations with over 80 countries of the world. The most important partners are European countries (Germany, Poland, France, Lithuania, Switzerland, Finland and Italy) and the CIS (Russian Federation and Byelorussia), and also Turkey, Malawi, USA, Brazil and Australia. Oil and products of its refining, textile, products of cellulose-paper, food, machine-building and chemical industry prevail in the structure of export.
Lately the trans-border cooperation has been getting rapid development in the region. In April 2003 it was made an agreement about creation of the Boundary Community European Region «Dnieper» in structure of Chernihiv, Gomel and Bryansk regions, and in December of same year the European Region was admitted to membership of the Association of European Boundary Regions.
The economic growth of the region is based on investment foundation. Foreign investors from 17 countries of the world have already invested almost USD 90 mln. in development of regional economy.
Main investment demands of the region mainly touch the reconstruction of processing enterprises of meat industry, row of sugar-houses; introduction of new technologies of processing of flax fibre, potato and vegetables; technical re-equipment of separate productions of CJSC «Worsted and Carded Company «Cheksil» – most powerful in Ukraine producer of wool and semi-wool fabrics.
The circle of registered enterprises with foreign investments (about 70) is extended. Among them there are JSC Tobacco Company «V.A.T.-Pryluky», representative office of Regal Petroleum Corporation Limited, Fornetti-Ukraine Ltd, Alitoni Ltd, JV «Vybir» Ltd, CJSC «PLAST-BOX-UKRAINE», Yang Ukraine Ltd and others.
Taking into account that the region is an important supplier of wood on the Ukrainian market, actual feature is building of enterprise of wood-shavings flags and also introduction of progressive technologies of wood waste recycling.
The volume of investments directed in development of fish economy grew considerably as well as in the sphere of hotel and restaurant economy.
With the purpose of accelerating rates of attracting investments in the regional economy, introduction of new technologies, increase of competitiveness of products and services, Chernihiv Region provides policy directed on creation of favourable investment climate.
The regional educational potential is made by 807 general schools, 26 vocational schools and 303 preschool establishments. Higher education is represented by five establishments of education of III-IV levels of accreditation and 18 higher educational establishments of I-III levels of accreditation.
Cultural and art life of Chernihiv Region is formed by four professional theatres, over 1600 mass libraries, clubs and houses of culture, 25 state museums, 39 schools of aesthetic education, school of culture and arts, musical school.
Chernihiv Region is one of several regions of Ukraine, where powerful tourist and recreational potential is concentrated.
Favourable climatic conditions, various world of flora and fauna, presence of about 650 natural objects makes territory of the region attractive both for short so long term types of rest. 13 sanatoriums and rest-homes, numerous preventive clinics, rest camps, children's camps, hunting and fishing camps, water stations and forest-parks function in the region.
But most of all ancient Chernihiv land is famous by plenty of prominent sights of history and architecture of XI – XII centuries and XVII – XIX centuries. Over 200 sights have world value and prove prominent role and place of Chernihiv principality in forming of Kyiv Rus as Slavic State.
The castle ensembles have large cultural value: Tarnovsky farmstead in the village Kachanivka, Ichnya District, Galagany farmstead in the village Sokyryntsy and settlement Digtyary, Sribne District, Rumyantsev-Zadunaysky farmstead in the village Vyshenky, Korop District, Palace of the last hetman of Ukraine, Count Kyrylo Rozumovsky in the settlement Baturin.
The lands of Chernihiv Region make source of creative inspiration of whole pleiad of cultural and scientific elite. Famous navigator Yu. Lysyansky was born there. Maria Zankovetska started her theatrical career. On the banks of the Desna River, famous producer O. Dovzhenko was born in Sosnystsya and spent young years there.
Chernihiv Region is ancient cultural and historical cell of our state. Having outlived revolutionary storms and disagreements, difficulties of war-times, it continues to accumulate energy for new rise generated by cultural property of centuries.
