Almost 80% of its territory is occupied by the Carpathians Mountains, rest – Prytysyanska lowland. On the region's territory there is highest top of the Ukrainian Carpathians – the Goverla Mountain (2061 m above sea level).
Unique natural ecosystem of the Carpathians biosphere preserve is put to most valuable ecosystems of the Earth and enters UNESCO international network of biosphere reservoirs.
Most treasure of the region is wood; hard leaf (62,2%) and coniferous (29,9%) breeds prevail in its natural structure.
The land is rich in different minerals, including specific and characteristic only for the Zakarpattya geological province. The mineral base is represented by almost 150 deposits and over 30 minerals.
9429 streams and rivers flow in the region; there are 137 natural lakes. Almost one fourth of hydroenergetic potential of Ukraine opening opportunities for development of small hydro energy is concentrated on the rivers.
The region has huge natural-recreational and resort potential. It is discovered and studied 360 sources and deposits of mineral and thermal waters, which by chemical composition do not yield to the famous waters of the Caucasus, Czech Republic, France, and their medical properties are mentioned in the archived documents of the middle of XV century. Zakarpattya Region is known as one of the most popular corners of treatment and making healthy.
For years of independence of Ukraine the substantial changes took place in the structure of industrial production that became more close to regional resources.
Branches of production specialization of Zakarpattya Region are follows as forest and woodworking industry (production of furniture, saw-timbers, veneer, parquet), chemical timber (goods of woodworking), food industry (production of wine, cognac, fruit can products, soft drinks and mineral water), light industry (sewing and knitting wares, linen, overcoats, jackets, men's suits, shoe, head-dresses), machine-building (metal-cutting tools, electric motors, pipeline armature, household gas convectors, gas meters), chemical (production of synthetic detergents, ethyl-acetate, arboreal and absorbent carbon), industry of building materials (production of macadam, facing materials, brick).
The unique geographical location of the region determines important role of transport communications in the economic complex of Zakarpattya Region. 140 km of Kyiv-Chop international highway (E-471, E-50, E-573) passes through the region's territory.
The region has three exits to the national railway systems through the Carpathians mountain pass. There are 52 stations in regional rail roads; a half of them are open for freight operations. Rail connection with foreign countries is carried out through six boundary transitions.
International Airport «Uzhgorod» of IV class («G») adopts aircrafts AN-24, 26, 32, Yak-40 and Yak-42, Il-18, AN-12, and also helicopters. The carrying capacity of the airport is 1500 passengers a day.
Many motor-car check-points through the state boundary of Ukraine that considerably simplifies connection of businessmen of our country with their foreign partners operate on the region's territory.
The power lines passing through the region's territory can provide transit transporting of electric power (to 3 000 MW) to the countries of Eastern and Western Europe and in reverse direction.
Transporting of power resources and raw materials from Russia to the countries of Central and Western Europe is ensured through the network of main pipelines with the general length over 1700 km.
The agroindustrial complex of Zakarpattya Region has features conditioned by geographical location, landscape and historical traditions of this land.
Land suitable for agriculture has the cost of gold here – 0,36 ha of agricultural lands per capita, including plough-land – 0,15 ha. The hard-working hands of peasants carefully process every piece of plough-land, meadows and mountain slopes to fully use possibilities of cultivation.
By level of intensity the plant growing industry of the region can be equal to the index in neighbouring countries – Slovakia and Hungary.
Land privatization has been finished. On the base of former collective farms it is created 248 new agricultural facilities on the basis of private property and lease of land shares using 87 800 ha of agricultural lands. The agricultural complex combines almost 1 500 farmers using 11 300 ha of agricultural lands.
The infrastructure of agrarian market has been formed in the region – four credits unions, 102 purveying points, five agrotrading houses, 14 exhibitions-fairs.
Unique natural conditions for growing vegetables, fruits, berries and grape assist to development of industrial viticulture for providing internal market of Ukraine and export.
One of the features of regional agroindustrial complex is intensification of pedigree business and productivity in stock-raising.
Agriculture of mountain districts is successfully specialized in breeding Ukrainian mountain Carpathians and other breeds of sheep productive for the region.
Food industry comprising almost 500 enterprises of different forms of property is important part of regional agroindustrial complex.
Its priority activities include beverage (alcoholic, beer, mineral waters and soft drinks) (44%), industrial processing of vegetables and fruits (33,3%). Today the network of sanatorium-resort and tourist-recreational objects is one of the largest in Ukraine.
The region proud is «Center of Europe» in the village Dilove, Rakhiv District, Lake Synevyrske in Mizhgirrya District and Valley of narcissuses in Khust District. Biosphere preserves, national and regional landscape parks are very attractive for the tourists.
Building of new modern tourist, mountain-ski bases and hotels actively lasts. About 600 tourist routes providing development of internal tourism operate now, namely: pedestrian, bus, mountain-ski and children excursion.
There are 1839 sights of history, archaeology, town-planning and architecture in the region. Most famous are castle-fortress in Uzhgorod (XVI c.), castle «Palanok» in Mukacheve (XIV-XVII c.), palace of counts Shenborniv in Chynadiyove, defense buildings (castles) in Khust, Koroleve, Serednye and village Nevytske.
Lately the holiday-makers are interested in rural tourism, bicycle tourism and ecotourism. In many villages of the region the proprietors of individual farms are ready to accommodate families from Ukraine and abroad. These are, in particular, village Podobovets of Mizhgirrya District, Rakhiv, Yasinya, Kvasy, Lazeshchyna, Lug of Rakhiv District, Kostryna, Stavne of Velykobereznyansky District, Andriyivka of Uzhgorod District and others.
The regional tourist-recreational industry is based on using natural resources of the land, including mineral waters. For treatment of allergist non-specific diseases of respiratory tracts, in particular asthmatic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, they use unique microclimate of salt mines of Solotvyno, Tyachivsky District, on which base famous Ukrainian allergist and regional hospitals operates. Zakarpattya Region is the land, which pride is hospitable and talented people, original nature and network of health complexes. The region hospitably meets all, who want to visit surprising corner of our country.
